As Switzerland and the EU continue to ease restrictions and with our employees having returned to work at our Geneva headquarters, I wanted to take a minute to reflect on our experience navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like many of us, I continue to watch helplessly as many businesses in regions hit the hardest by the pandemic struggle to remain operational. Viewing this historical moment through the lens of an entrepreneur, I can only imagine the emotions of defeat, anger, frustration, and helplessness so many are feeling. I often find myself wondering how and why Selexis was able to avoid business disruption against the seemingly insurmountable challenges resulting from the onslaught of COVID-19.
This is what I have come up with:
I believe Selexis, along with companies across the life sciences industry, is simply in the right line of business. To begin with, we are already equipped to prevent and contain the spread of pathogens—after all, lives quite literally depend on our ability to maintain sterile laboratory conditions. This is in addition to our utmost priority of ensuring the safety of our employees.
Simply put, as scientists, we have an in-depth understanding of biology and how simple acts such as handwashing, social distancing and wearing a mask can be powerful tactics in disease prevention. While many companies in other industries were thrust into a completely foreign situation, we already had the necessary tools to combat this virus.
Other factors I believe contributed to our ability to better navigate this challenging business environment include:
I believe my background as a scientist and entrepreneur, Selexis’ position in the life sciences, and without question—the flexibility and collaborative nature of our employees—created a stable path forward, one that allowed us to continue servicing our partner programs without interruption.
When you are forging a new path, there will always be new twists and unexpected turns. My mission is to ensure we can continue to operate smoothly amid any business climate. To that end, our risk mitigation and emergency preparedness plans are living, breathing documents that addresses our vulnerabilities, inform us of new possibilities, and provide a path forward so that we may execute upon those possibilities.
As a final thought, this incredibly trying experience has reinforced the value our executive team places upon hiring top talent. I am constantly reminded of how fortunate Selexis is to have this incredible team in place. Their humanity and dedication are second to none, and in this time of uncertainty, I know that our team has what it takes to persevere.
